Tanglewood, Houston, Texas
Tanglewood is an upscale neighborhood in downtown Houston that is known for its tree-lined streets, lush landscape and beautiful gardens. It was developed on coastal prairie land in the late 1940s as a country retreat in the middle of the city and, after a rough start, the first residents purchased homes six months later following devastating flooding in the area that did not affect the new homes there.
The lot sizes are larger and the architecture of the homes in Tanglewood is more varied than most historic neighborhoods in Houston. Home styles include rambling ranch, Tudor, Spanish, modern and contemporary. There are also multi-story condominium buildings in the neighborhood, including Tanglewood, Tanglegrove and The Hawthorne.
At some point early in its existence the neighborhood’s Garden Club planted many live oak trees that are now mature and create a shady oasis of Tanglewood’s streets. Residents enjoy the peacefulness and walkability of the family-friendly, dog-friendly neighborhood.
Houston Independent School District serves the Tanglewood area, with public schoolchildren zoned to Briargrove Elementary School, Tanglewood Middle School and Milby High School. T.H. Rogers School is also available to Tanglewood students, offering K-12 classes to gifted and talented students as well as students with disabilities and special needs.
The Houston Country Club is located in Tanglewood and offers members social activities as well as physical activities including golf, swimming and tennis. There are many shopping and dining options easily accessible from the neighborhood. Whether you want to shop the upscale boutiques of The Galleria or browse the European-style Uptown Park shopping center, you will be sure to find an amazing selection of quality merchandise.
Neighborhood residents enjoy walking, gardening, do-it-yourself projects and spending time with their families and pets. Tanglewood Park offers walking and running trails, playground equipment, tennis courts, a large grassy field for pick-up sports, a splash pad and a dog park.
Tanglewood residents have a strong sense of community that is on full exhibit during the neighborhood’s annual Christmas light display which draws spectators from the entire Houston area. Other examples of community spirit include the Tanglewood Garden Club that was founded in 1951 and is still going strong, beautifying the neighborhood and fostering friendships.
