The Design Firm Story
The Design Firm began with a simple vision and a deep love for interior design. In 1979, at a time when professional interior design was not easily accessible—Kara believed everyone deserved a beautiful home, and she dreamed of creating a one-stop design destination that made the process easy, enjoyable, and truly transformative for every client.
What started in Kara and Eric’s garage, with just the two of them doing everything, quickly grew into something much larger. As their reputation for creativity and service spread, The Design Firm expanded into its first rented space off Murphy Road in Stafford. By 1993, their dream of a permanent home became a reality when they purchased the land at 13013 Southwest Freeway. Working closely with a local architect, they designed the building themselves and oversaw every detail its construction themselves—creating the landmark showroom that still houses The Design Firm today.
A defining part of The Design Firm’s legacy is the people who have helped build it. Many of our team members have been with us for decades—30 years, 29 years, 19 years, 18 years, 12 years. This kind of dedication is rare, and it speaks to the culture Kara and Eric created. We are more than coworkers; we are a family. Over the years, we’ve watched employees come to us straight out of school, grow into their careers, get married, and start families of their own. Their stories are woven into the fabric of this company.
Through economic highs and lows, personal challenges, and remarkable achievements, The Design Firm has remained strong because of Kara and Eric’s unwavering commitment to people—both clients and staff. To this day, you’ll find them in the office every week. Kara continues to design with the same passion she started with in 1979, still believing deeply that great design has the power to change the way people live.
