Cedarspur Drive, Spring Valley Village – Houston, Texas

A house on Cedarspur Drive, in the Brighton Place neighborhood of the Houston enclave of Spring Valley Village, features a large corner lot, an open floorplan, and elements that are compatible with several interior design styles that emphasize natural materials and earthy tones.

The front entrance to the home brings guests into a foyer with a stairway on the right, a hall straight ahead, and a wide cased doorway on the left leading to the warm and inviting living room. The living room is long, with a view of, and access to, the backyard swimming pool. The room features laminate flooring and a soaring vaulted ceiling with recessed lighting. Two ceiling fans are suspended from the high ceiling. On one side of the room, a fireplace is nestled into a brick surround that rises to the ceiling and protrudes at the base to form a raised hearth. The bricks on the face of the fireplace surround are placed in a herringbone pattern. A wood mantel is affixed to the brick face above the fireplace, while on either side of the fireplace, twin wooden bookshelves are custom built to the dimensions of the hearth's arms. The finishing touch is the natural wood trim that matches the bookshelves, placed around the edges of the brick where it meets the wall and ceiling.  The opposite wall features a wet bar with a brick facade and a polished wood countertop. On the back wall of the living room, two large windows are separated by a framed glass door that opens directly onto the backyard pool deck. The vaulted ceiling, exposed brick, and connection to the outdoors make this room compatible with quite a few diverse interior design styles.

A wide cased doorway at the rear of the living room leads to a long room that can be used as a dining room, a family room, or a combination of both. This space features beautiful Saltillo tile flooring. On one end of the room, a custom-built wooden cabinet has lower cupboards for storage space, upper glass-front display cupboards, and, in the center, three rows of eighteen wine cubbies. A doorway near the cabinet allows access to the kitchen. At the other end of the room, the corner features windows with built-in bench seating overlooking the swimming pool on the side wall, and tall windows on the back wall with a view of the patio. The bench seating doubles as a concealed storage space. A tiny hall leads to an exterior door opening to the patio and pool deck. The lighting in this space is a blend of recessed lighting augmented by a ceiling fan/light combination at one end, and recessed, adjustable spotlights augmented with a palm leaf ceiling fan/light combination at the other end. The Saltillo tile flooring, concealed storage space and other functional design elements, and connection to outdoor spaces also allows a diverse range of interior design styles in this room. The walls in the living room, dining room and family room are cream colored with white baseboards and window trim. The ceilings are white.

The open floorplan flows from the family room to the breakfast nook and kitchen. The breakfast nook features a stained-glass clerestory window. The flooring is Saltillo tile, and the lighting is recessed adjustable spotlights augmented with a ceiling fan/light combination.

The kitchen is centrally located on the first floor, the heart of the home. All the downstairs rooms can be reached through rooms and hallways that flow past the kitchen. Both the breakfast nook and the kitchen have a rustic, Mediterranean/Spanish vibe with natural wood tones in the cabinetry, Saltillo tile flooring and a stucco treatment on the cream-colored walls. Many interior design styles lean into these elements. The natural wood cabinetry has brass-toned hardware with white, square tile countertops and backsplash. The double drop-in sink is zinc with a brushed nickel faucet with a pull-down spray nozzle. The appliances are stainless steel and include a refrigerator, dishwasher, and double stacked wall ovens. A beverage refrigerator is set into a customized space in the lower cabinetry. One side of the L-shaped lower cabinet faces the breakfast nook and has a breakfast counter with room to seat three or four people. A work island is positioned two or three steps behind the section of cabinetry with the breakfast counter. The island features a glass cooktop with an exhaust fan mounted on the wood-paneled section of ceiling above it. There are also hooks affixed to the wood panel for hanging cookware and utensils. Half of the island countertop is the same square; white tile found elsewhere in the kitchen. The other half is a wood butcher block. The island also features storage cupboards and electrical outlets. The kitchen lighting is a combination of recessed lights, track lights and two small spotlights on the exhaust fan over the cooktop. A small pantry is located at the top of a small hallway behind the kitchen island. A large pantry is located across and a couple of steps down the hall from the small one.

A half-bath is located down the hall from the pantry, toward the foyer. The bathroom walls are covered in vintage-style chintz wallpaper. It's a small room with a small vanity tucked into a tight corner. The vanity is white with a white quartz countertop and an oval drop-in sink. The faucet and cabinet pulls are bronze tone. A gold-framed, rectangular mirror is mounted vertically above the vanity. A sconce with frosted glass shade is installed above the mirror.

Exiting the bathroom and turning right leads to the foyer and the staircase to the second floor. Between the side of the staircase and the wall separating the foyer from the living room, a small room has been created to house a wet bar. Entrance to the room is through a set of vintage style, swinging saloon doors. The walls of the room are paneled. The room contains a counter with a sink installed and glass shelves above to hold bottles and glassware. A pass-through window with a polished wood ledge allows drinks to be handed to guests in the living room.

Returning to the hall and passing the bathroom, a door on the right leads to the master bedroom suite. The spacious master bedroom features laminate flooring, cream color walls, and a white ceiling. Baseboards, window trim, doors, and door trim are all white. Overhead lighting is provided by a ceiling fan/light fixture combination centered over the room. There are three doors in the room; one provides access to a walk-in closet, one opens to a private patio at the front of the house, and one leads to the ensuite bathroom.

The ensuite bathroom walls are tan with white baseboards. The ceiling, doors and trim are white.  The flooring is tan ceramic tile. There are three windows on one wall, allowing plentiful natural light into the room. A long, white vanity takes up one wall. The vanity has a white quartz countertop and backsplash, dual oval, undermount sinks, and chrome and white hardware. A large, gold-framed mirror hangs horizontally above the vanity. Across from the vanity, a combination bathtub/shower is nestled into an alcove. The walls around the bathtub are white ceramic tile. The wall next to the bathtub has two stepped protrusions. A small white makeup vanity with two drawers is set against one protrusion. A gold-framed mirror hangs above the makeup vanity, and a three-light vanity light with frosted glass shades hangs above the mirror. The second wall protrusion has a storage cabinet built into it. A large walk-in closet is accessed from the bathroom. An interior designer can choose from many design styles to refresh both master suite rooms.

Exiting the master suite and walking straight up the hall toward the kitchen leads to a room directly across from the kitchen. This is the home office. It features Saltillo tile flooring, and walls painted desert red. The ceiling is white, with a wooden ceiling fan/light fixture combination in the center. A window on one wall overlooks the side yard. Two wooden desks have been custom made to fit against two opposite walls. Each desk has enough space to fit two desktop computers and two chairs, with room left over. Each desk has lower cabinets and drawers, and upper cabinets that reach the ceiling.

Leaving the office and continuing down the hall leads to a laundry room that is next door to the office. At the end of the hall, a door opens to a small hallway at right angles to the door, leading to an exterior door at the side of the house. Continuing straight and crossing the hall brings one into a room with Saltillo tile floors, paneled walls, a white ceiling and white trim. A white ceiling fan/light combination is centered over the room. A window overlooks the side yard of the house. There is a loft space in the room that is reached by a ladder bolted to the floor. A door near the loft leads to the backyard pool deck. This flex room could be used for a bedroom, a study, a library, a playroom, a game room... With the help of an interior designer, the room can be adapted for almost any use.

In a corner of the flex room, a door opens to a bathroom which also has a door that opens to the pool deck. The bathroom has a white tile floor with a blue tile border. Some walls are painted white, and some walls are white tiles with blue tile trim. The ceiling is white, with recessed lighting installed. A pedestal sink stands in an alcove. A rectangular mirror is hung horizontally above the sink. A glass-fronted cabinet stands atop a counter to the left of the sink. To the right of the sink is a window made of glass blocks, allowing sunlight into the room while protecting privacy. The bathroom also contains a walk-in shower, a toilet, and glass block clerestory windows high on one wall. It is a clean, bright space that, due to its proximity to the swimming pool, is ideal to utilize as a pool bathroom and changing room.

From the foyer, a staircase takes one to the second floor of the house. The second floor contains three bedrooms, a bathroom, and a flex space. All the upstairs bedrooms can easily be furnished and accessorized in almost any interior design style.

At the top of the polished wooden staircase, a large, minstrel gallery-type landing provides a view of the living room from a floor-to-ceiling opening with wooden railing built across it. The flooring of the landing is hardwood. A flex space around the top of the staircase offers a choice of uses. An interior designer could make it a casual family room, a game room, a homework area, or whatever type of space suits the homeowner.

A hall leads from one end of the upstairs to the other end. Directly across the hall from the flex space is a bedroom with a hardwood floor, cream color walls and a white ceiling with a ceiling fan/light fixture combination in the center. The baseboards are white, and a white door opens to a walk-in closet. White-framed glass double doors provide access to a rooftop terrace.

Continuing down the hall past the first bedroom, a door on the left leads to a second bedroom. This room has hard wood floors, cream color walls with white baseboards, and a white ceiling with a ceiling fan/light fixture combination centered over the room. A door to the left of the entry opens to a walk-in closet. A window on one wall overlooks the backyard swimming pool. Next to the window, a white-framed glass door allows access to the rooftop terrace.

At the end of the hall, with a direct line of sight to the landing, is the door to a third bedroom. This corner room features a hardwood floor, cream color walls with white baseboards, and a white sloped ceiling with a ceiling fan/light fixture combination centered over the room. A white built-in bookcase takes up one corner of the room where the slope of the ceiling is lowest. A round, flush mounted light fixture is installed on the ceiling slope over the bookcase. Immediately to the right as the room is entered, a white built-in desk takes up the wall, and a white, custom built, triangle shaped bookcase is mounted above the desk, against the slant of the wall under the ceiling's slope. A window on one wall overlooks the side yard of the house. The door opening to a walk-in closet is located near the window. An exterior door on the other end of the walk-in closet allows access to the rooftop terrace and, via a curving metal staircase, to the swimming pool.

The three upstairs bedrooms share a bathroom that is centrally located, across the hall from two of the bedrooms and next to the third. This bathroom has large, sand colored tile flooring. The same tiles cover the walls of the combination bathtub/shower. The rest of the bathroom walls are white. The sloped ceiling is white with recessed lighting. A white vanity takes up most of the wall opposite the bathtub. The vanity has a quartz countertop and drop-in sink. Hardware throughout the bathroom is chrome with white accents. A large, gold-framed mirror is hung horizontally over the vanity. The toilet is on the corner near the vanity.
