Hedwig Village, Texas

A house on Holidan Way in the Houston enclave of Hedwig Village features several bonus rooms with no assigned use, allowing future owners to indulge their imaginations, and perhaps their internal interior designers.

Entering the front door of the house, visitors find themselves in a hallway that runs the width of the house. The hall has white marble tile flooring, white walls with white chair rails and baseboards, and white ceilings with white crown molding and recessed lighting. Cased doorways along the hall are trimmed with white crown molding. There is a total of four windows along the length of the hall, overlooking the front lawn and circular driveway.

Turning right after entering the house and walking down the hall leads to the first bonus space, a room-sized alcove off the hall. The space has three walls, with the fourth side of the room open to the hall. The walls are white with chair rails; the ceiling is white with crown molding. The flooring is luxurious Brazilian cherry hardwood. This space, with the addition of a sofa and a couple of chairs, would make a nice place for unexpected visitors to wait. An interior designer would probably have fun furnishing this unassigned space.

Continuing a few feet past the alcove brings one to the formal dining room. The flooring in this room is a warm cherry hardwood. The walls are white with white baseboards and chair rails. The ceiling is white with white crown molding and window trim. The recessed lighting is augmented by a modern, six-armed chandelier with shaded candles suspended from the center of the ceiling via a white ceiling medallion. There are two windows in the room, one overlooking the circular drive and front lawn, and the other overlooking the stone paved front entrance and portico. If a formal dining room is not required, an interior designer could easily convert this room into a home office.

The kitchen can be accessed directly from the dining room. The kitchen is a gleaming white space with white marble tile flooring, white walls with white baseboards, and a white ceiling with white crown molding. Cabinetry is white with brushed nickel hardware. Countertops are white marble with soft gray veining. Appliances are all top-of-the-line models in stainless steel. The sink is a stainless steel undermount with a pull-out spray faucet. There are two small, mullioned windows over the sink. A gray painted kitchen island provides both a workspace and an eating space with room for four high stools or chairs. Lighting is recessed throughout the room, with two, three-light, pendant lights with clear glass, bowl-shaped shades, suspended from ceiling medallions over the kitchen island. Near one end of the island, a wood-framed, frosted glass door opens to a walk-in pantry. A white painted door leads to the laundry room. The kitchen, with its neutral color palette and hardwood floor, is easily adaptable to many interior design styles.

A wide, cased doorway trimmed with white crown molding leads from the kitchen to a breakfast room. This room is a long, narrow space containing a dry bar in an alcove on one long side and a wall of floor-to-almost-ceiling mullioned windows overlooking the backyard swimming pool on the other side. Walls are white with white chair rails and baseboards. The ceiling is white with white crown molding. Flooring is the same rich, red-toned, Brazilian cherry hardwood found in other areas of the first floor. A modern, six-armed, candelabra chandelier is suspended from a white ceiling medallion centered between the windows and the dry bar. Lower cabinetry in the dry bar is white with a quartz countertop. A beverage refrigerator is installed between the two lower cupboards. Upper cabinetry is white, with some cupboards featuring frosted glass doors and interior lights. A white painted wine rack is included in the upper cabinetry and provides space for fifteen bottles of wine.

A door next to the dry bar opens to a half-bathroom. This small room features a polished travertine tile floor. The walls are white from the ceiling to the halfway point of each wall, and polished travertine tile from the halfway point to the floor. The ceiling is white with recessed lighting. The toilet and pedestal sink are white. The sink faucet and a round towel ring are brushed nickel. A round mirror hangs above the sink. An interior designer might suggest adding sconces on either side of the mirror.

Around the corner from the breakfast room, the open floorplan flows into a formal living room. At this point in the room, the mullioned windows of the breakfast room are replaced with dual sets of French doors connecting the living room to the poolside patio, a sought-after interior design feature. Between the two sets of doors is a white Carrara marble fireplace with intricate scrolling on the surround, and a Carrara marble mantel and hearth. The beautiful Brazilian cherry hardwood flooring is continued in the living room. This room is large enough to contain two seating areas, with each space roomy enough to hold two sofas or a sofa and two or three armchairs. The walls are white with white chair rails. The ceiling is white with white crown molding and recessed lights. A wide, cased doorway leads to the foyer, directly across from the front door. On either side of the cased doorway are built-in shelves and cabinets. This room is adaptable to many interior design styles.

Exiting the living room into the foyer, a right turn leads past the staircase, to the first-floor bedrooms. The hall ends at the door downstairs in the secondary bedroom. This room has the same Brazilian cherry hardwood flooring found in other first floor rooms. The walls are white with white baseboards and chair rails. The ceiling is white with white crown molding. A white ceiling fan with a light fixture is mounted in the center of the ceiling. There are windows on two walls of the room; one overlooks the front lawn and circular driveway; the other overlooks the stone paved area in front of the portico. Double doors hide the large closet.

From the bedroom and turning left down a short hallway leads to a full bathroom on the left. This room has a polished travertine floor and baseboards. The ceiling and walls are white. There are two rooms; the inner room is a water closet containing the toilet and a walk-in shower with white stone tile walls and a clear glass door. The outer room holds a vanity cabinet on one wall with cupboards and drawers for storage and a white marble countertop with pale gray veining. Cabinet hardware is brushed nickel. The other wall holds a pedestal sink with a brushed nickel faucet, a rectangular, beveled mirror hung horizontally, and a brushed nickel towel ring. Above the mirror, a 3-light vanity light with white glass shades hangs on a horizontal chrome bar. An elegant globe light fixture in the shape of a lotus is mounted flush with the ceiling. A window in the water closet overlooks the side yard of the house.

From the bathroom, a turn to the left brings one to the master suite door. The spacious master bedroom has Brazilian cherry hardwood flooring, white walls with white chair rails and white baseboards, and a white ceiling with white crown molding and recessed lighting. A white ceiling fan is centered on the ceiling. Two mullioned windows overlook the backyard swimming pool. The room is large enough for a king-sized bed and traditional bedroom furniture, as well as a seating area. An interior designer can choose from many design styles without needing to alter the elements that are already in the room. A doorway on the right leads to the ensuite bathroom.

The bathroom flooring is polished travertine, which is also used on the bottom half of the walls. The top half of the walls are painted white. The ceiling is white with recessed lighting. The vanity is in the area of the room just inside the door. It's a long vanity with white painted cupboards and drawers, and a white marble countertop with dual, rectangular, undermount sinks. Cabinet hardware and sink faucets are black metal. A large, rectangular, gold framed mirror is hung horizontally above the vanity. A three-light vanity light with clear glass shades is mounted on a bronze horizontal bar above the mirror. Around the corner from the vanity is a soaking tub installed in a corner, and a travertine and glass shower enclosure. Two large, frosted glass windows are located behind the bathtub. All hardware is black metal.

Two walk-in closets are accessed from the bathroom. Both closets have travertine flooring, white walls, white ceilings, and plenty of white built-in shelves and drawers in addition to hanging rods.

A second primary bedroom is located on the second floor of the house, over the area of the garage and laundry room on the first floor. This bedroom requires a step down from the hall. It is a spacious room with a walk-in closet that is actually longer than the room and has two access doors. The walls of the room are white with white chair rails and baseboards. The ceiling is white with white crown molding. Recessed lights are installed in the ceiling, and a white ceiling fan is centered over the room. The flooring is the beautiful Brazilian cherry hardwood located throughout the house. A double window with mullions is located on one wall, overlooking the backyard. A door in the corner near the window opens to a small hall that leads to a second walk-in closet and the ensuite bathroom. The bathroom floor and baseboards are travertine tile. The ceiling and walls are white. Recessed lights are installed in the ceiling. A long, white vanity on one wall has brushed nickel cupboard and drawer pulls. The countertop and backsplash are white marble with pale gray veining. Two rectangular, undermount sinks have brushed nickel faucets. A large, beveled, rectangular mirror is hung horizontally above the vanity. A three-light vanity light fixture with clear glass shades is mounted on a horizontal bronze-colored bar. Across from the vanity, the toilet is installed next to a walk-in shower. The inner shower walls are travertine tile, while the outer walls are clear glass. The flooring is mosaic tile. Behind a narrow partition wall at the end of the vanity, a soaking tub sits in the corner with a travertine surround and backsplash. A window near the bathtub overlooks the backyard. There is a second door that leads from the bathroom to a large room that is not part of the bedroom suite.

This long room can serve many purposes, including a family room, a game room, or a playroom. An interior designer will be able to suggest multiple uses for the room and design it to the owner's preference. This long room features Brazilian cherry flooring, white walls with white baseboards, and a white ceiling with white crown molding and modern, semi flush mount light fixtures in the low end of the room. There is a step up to one end of the room. In this area, there are recessed lights, as well as three modern, brass pendant lights suspended from the ceiling. A black, built-in storage unit of shelves, cupboards and drawers takes up the back wall of this space. One wall of this room has three large, mullioned windows overlooking the side yard, and an arched niche in the wall for displaying a piece of art, a vase of flowers or a plant.

Leaving this room via the main hallway leads to two bedrooms, one on each side of the hall. The room on the left is the larger of the two bedrooms. The flooring in this room is rich cherry hardwood. Walls are white with white baseboards and chair rails. The ceiling is white with white crown molding and recessed lights. A white ceiling fan is centered over the room. One wall is filled with white built-in shelves and drawers. The opposite wall has two mullioned windows overlooking the front lawn. This room features a walk-in closet and an ensuite bathroom.

The toilet is situated between the vanity and the large walk-in shower. The shower has white marble walls with light gray veining, and a mosaic tile floor. The door is clear glass. An interior designer might recommend placing a small potted plant on the vanity counter to add a splash of color to the room.

Stepping across the hall brings one to the second secondary bedroom. This room is long with cherry hardwood flooring, white walls and a white ceiling. Baseboards, chair rails, crown molding, and window trim are all white. A white ceiling fan is mounted in the middle of the ceiling. The lighting is recessed.
